DCS was founded in 1890 under the name Ricketson Mineral Color Works. At that time, Ricketson’s iron oxide pigments were used mostly for barn paint and snow fence preservative. When the company fell on hard times, one of its customers, Delta Oil Products, purchased it out of bankruptcy in the late 1960s, giving it the new name—Delta Color & Supply Co.

In 1976, James F. Crawford Sr., one of the owners of Delta Oil Products, purchased the color division. He renamed it DCS Color & Supply Co., Inc. His son Jim was already working in the plant while attending college and joined DCS full time after graduation.

In 1984, Jim Sr.’s daughter, Cathy Higgins, joined DCS in sales and marketing, ultimately becoming vice president of sales and marketing. Jim Crawford became president in 1990, and in 1995, Jim and Cathy renamed the company Dynamic Color Systems.

In April of 2013, Jim’s son Jimmy joined the company as vice president of development, bringing the third generation of Crawfords into the company.
