Installation

Preparatory Work
The mixing shall conform to ASTM C94, the portland cement ASTM C150, and the coarse and fine aggregates ASTM C33. Color addition should not exceed 10% of the weight of the cement conforming to ASTM C979.

Application
The quantity of concrete being mixed in a mixer should be no less than 40% of the capacity of the mixing drum ( a minimum of 4 yards in an 8 yard truck).
Before adding the dry ingredients the color should be added to approximately 40 gallons of water (for a full load) while the drum is charging. Creating this water and color slurry before anything else is added is essential for good color dispersal throughout the mix. Make sure there are 70–100 revolutions before discharging the concrete.
On small loads (less than 4 cubic yards) tail loading of color is recommended. The reason for this is for slump control. Small loads can be over wet very easily. The color addition and mixing should be done under inspection in the yard rather than at a job site.
Steel troweling should be light to avoid burning. If brooming is done remember that substantial amounts of the color will be broomed off.
Always use the stiffest slump which is appropriate for the job to achieve the best color performance.

Maintenance
After the concrete has cured for a period of at least 28 days various “proprietary sealers” may be used for protection against the elements. Please check with the sealer manufacturer for aesthetic changes the sealer may cause to the appearance of the Colored Concrete Surface.
